Is an Annual Boiler Service Really Worth It?

Short answer: yes — here's why
An annual boiler service is the single highest-ROI bit of household maintenance you can buy. For around £75–£95 a year, you protect your warranty, reduce running costs by 5–15%, catch problems before they turn into £600 callouts, and — most importantly — confirm there's no carbon monoxide leak. I service hundreds of Glow-worm, Worcester, Vaillant and Ideal boilers across Northamptonshire every year, and the most expensive jobs I quote are almost always for boilers that haven't been touched in 4–5 years.
Warranty protection (the bit most people don't realise)
Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Glow-worm all require an annual service — carried out by a Gas Safe engineer and recorded in your benchmark book — to keep the warranty valid. Skip a year and you've potentially voided 8–10 years of cover. A new heat exchanger costs £600+. A new PCB costs £350+. A skipped service to save £85 can become a £950 mistake very quickly.
What's actually included in a real service
A proper service is more than a quick visual check. I strip down the burner and clean it, check gas pressure with a manometer, run a flue gas analysis with a calibrated Sprint Pro, check the condensate trap and siphon, inspect seals and the heat exchanger, test the safety devices (overheat and pressure relief), verify the expansion vessel charge, and benchmark the results in your boiler book. The whole job takes 45–60 minutes.
Efficiency savings — real numbers
A serviced, properly-combusting boiler runs 5–15% more efficiently. For a typical 3-bed Northampton semi spending £1,400 a year on gas, that's £70–£210 a year back in your pocket. The service pays for itself before Christmas.
